Police in Burgas Massively Stops E-Scooters on "Odrin" Street: Checks, Fines and New Rules

Today, on "Odrin" Street in Burgas, mass police checks are being carried out on drivers of electric scooters and scooters. Mobile teams from the Traffic Police stop for inspection everyone who drives individual electric vehicles (IEPS), requiring documents and monitoring compliance with the new rules.

According to the latest changes in the Road Traffic Act, from September 7, 2025, all drivers of e-scooters and scooters are required to wear a protective helmet, have "Civil Liability" insurance and observe a ban on driving at night. The fine for riding without a helmet is BGN 50, and in the absence of insurance, the penalty can reach BGN 400.

Other violations are often found during the checks - speeding, using a phone without hands-free, transporting a passenger and driving on sidewalks. In each case, fines of BGN 50 to BGN 200 are imposed, depending on the severity.

In the first week of the operation in Burgas alone, over 40 administrative acts were imposed on "Odrin" Street and neighboring neighborhoods. According to the Traffic Police, the control actions will continue during the winter months, and in February 2026, scooters will already be subject to mandatory registration and will only be able to be driven on bike lanes or on the right side of the road.

The changes aim to reduce the number of accidents with electric scooters, which, by the autumn of 2025, have increased by 18% in Burgas alone. Experts advise drivers to be especially careful and check if they meet all the requirements before going on the road.
