The Complex Oncology Center in Burgas has introduced a modern scalp cooling system that helps patients undergoing chemotherapy to preserve their hair. The new equipment, called the Paxman Scalp Cooling System, is a leading global technology for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced alopecia - one of the most common and emotionally stressful side effects of cancer treatment.
The Paxman system works by lowering the scalp temperature to 18-22°C, which reduces the flow of chemotherapeutic drugs to the hair follicles and helps preserve them. Clinical studies show that for certain chemotherapy regimens, the system's success rate in preserving hair reaches up to 80%.
The advantages of the method include non-invasiveness, safety, and suitability for most patients with solid tumors. The use of the Paxman Scalp Cooling System reduces the need for wigs or scarves and improves the psycho-emotional state of patients.
The new equipment is available to all patients of the Burgas Complex Oncology Center who are about to undergo chemotherapy, and participation in the procedure is voluntary. Due to the limited number of devices, a waiting list will be maintained if there is high interest. The center has already launched an information and demonstration campaign, within which patients can learn about the technology and try it out completely free of charge. After evaluating the effectiveness and collecting feedback from users, the service will be included in the price list of the medical facility, so that it is accessible to anyone who wants it.
