Minister of Interior Daniel Mitov and FBI Deputy Director Daniel Bongino held a meeting at the FBI headquarters, where they discussed the new challenges facing the common Euro-Atlantic security system. These challenges arise from the changed geopolitical situation as a result of the actions of China and other authoritarian regimes.
The conversation also involved the directors of the Main Directorate "National Police" (GDNP) Chief Commissioner Zahary Vaskov, the Main Directorate "Fight against Organized Crime" (GDBOP) Chief Commissioner Boyan Raev, and the Main Directorate "Border Police" (GDBP) Chief Commissioner Anton Zlatanov. Among the topics discussed were cybersecurity, the fight against the spread of drugs and precursors, as well as the conduct of joint training and exercise initiatives.
Minister Mitov stated that an "honest and open conversation between true partners and allies" had taken place. He pointed out that threats to both countries following the introduction of new technologies such as drones were also discussed. Mitov asked the hosts to share with the Bulgarian police services the American experience in creating special operational groups for more effective counteraction to crime, terrorism, hybrid threats, and other areas.
Later, Minister Mitov and the Bulgarian delegation held working meetings with the leaders and experts from the FBI's criminal investigation and counterterrorism departments. The main topics included organized criminal groups from the Balkans operating on the territory of the USA, and new terrorist threats. The Bulgarian delegation also familiarized itself with the risks posed to minors and adolescents by the so-called "764 terrorist groups" - a decentralized extremist transnational network for sexual extortion, animal abuse, and incitement to self-harm or suicide. Chief Commissioner Raev stated that GDBOP had also encountered and successfully uncovered similar cases of crimes on the network.
