Staffing crisis in Sunny Beach: Season at risk

The largest Bulgarian seaside resort, Sunny Beach, is preparing for the summer season amidst serious difficulties. Days before the arrival of the first tourists, many hotels remain closed, and those that are open are operating with limited staff.

"Everything is ready on our end, but we hit a wall with the consular services and there is no progress," commented a hotelier whose business relies on 80% foreign employees.

Main obstacles facing the sector:

• Administrative difficulties: Slow visa issuance for employees from Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Nepal.
• Lack of local staff: Difficulty in finding waiters, bartenders, and receptionists with the necessary training.
• Short season: Hoteliers note that the season is becoming increasingly shorter, which further complicates hiring.

Although the tourism industry remains optimistic for the start of the season around June 2nd, hoteliers warn that services will be offered at less than full capacity. Businesses are calling for urgent administrative reforms, as the lack of labor is becoming a chronic problem for the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
