According to the Law on the Introduction of the Euro, the main principle is the protection of consumers, as the euro will not lead to an increase in the prices of goods and services. From August 8, 2023, the labeling of prices in levs and euros will be mandatory, so that consumers can easily make comparisons.
Maria Filipova explained that to calculate the price in euros of a product costing 2 levs, this amount must be divided by the official exchange rate of the euro of 1.95583 and rounded to the third decimal place. Thus, for a product worth 2 levs, the price in euros will be 1.02 euros.
The Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) and the Commission for Protection of Competition (CPC) have already started preventive actions to monitor the behavior of traders with the introduction of the euro. Joint inspections are planned for at least 1.5-2 years to ensure that there is no unjustified increase in prices.
The bill on the agri-food chain, in which the CPC is the main control body, provides for a ceiling on trade surcharges up to 300,000 levs for a violation. An electronic register will also be created to track the entire chain.
The CPC has already started inspections of catering and entertainment establishments, which must also introduce double pricing. A website is also planned where weekly information on price changes in the major food chains will be published, so that consumers can monitor the dynamics.
