The National Revenue Agency (NRA) has announced the start of the tax campaign for 2026, which will be held under the sign of the Euro. Key changes, deadlines, reliefs, and important details from the tax campaign.

The National Revenue Agency (NRA) announced the start of the tax campaign for 2026, which is the first in euros after Bulgaria's accession to the Eurozone. The campaign started on January 10th with the submission of tax returns electronically and on January 12th in the NRA offices.

Main highlights:

  • Euro in action: The declared amounts for the period up to December 31, 2025, are in leva, but the amounts due are paid in euros.
  • Dual circulation: Dual circulation is valid until January 31, 2026, but payments to the NRA are cashless, i.e. only cash payments can be in leva.
  • NRA preparation: The agency is ready for the euro, with systems having been prepared in advance.

Deadlines and methods of submission:

  • The deadline for submitting declarations is by the end of April.
  • Individuals who have received income other than that from employment relationships should submit declarations.
  • Those who submit declarations electronically by March 31st receive a 5% discount on the tax due (up to BGN 500).

Important for the recovery of sums:

  • Individuals who have amounts to be recovered state the amount in leva, but receive the money in euros.
  • When submitting electronically, the currency conversion is done automatically.

Pre-filled declarations:

  • By the end of February, payers of income submit information to the NRA.
  • The NRA prepares pre-filled declarations, which are usually available from the beginning of March.
  • 84% of individuals take advantage of this method.

Tax relief:

  • Relief for raising children and children with disabilities remains unchanged: BGN 600, BGN 1200 and BGN 1800.
  • It is important for parents not to have public obligations in order to take advantage.
  • The relief is for the child, not the parent.
  • For children with disabilities, both the relief for raising children and that for children with disabilities can be used.

New possibilities:

  • In Appendix 13, the possibility of describing income from scrap returns has been added.

Other important details:

  • A personal identification code (PIC) can be requested at the NRA offices, by phone or by e-mail.
  • The declaration must include both income from non-employment relationships and from employment ones.
  • The penalty for an unsubmitted declaration on time is up to BGN 500.
