The former leader of the Tesla Optimus project, Chris Welty, expresses doubts about the suitability of the company's humanoid robots for work in factory conditions. He claims that such machines cannot currently effectively perform routine production tasks, in contrast to specialized automated systems.

Elon Musk believes that the Optimus robots will become a key asset for Tesla, increasing the company's value to trillions of dollars. He expects thousands of such robots to be deployed in Tesla's factories this year, and their production to reach millions by 2030. However, according to Walti, humanoid robots are not suitable for high-intensity and monotonous production.

We recall that Tesla announced Optimus in August 2021 as a universal bipedal robot capable of performing dangerous or repetitive work instead of humans. Since then, the development has been improved in terms of speed, durability, weight, and balance. Nevertheless, the robots currently demonstrate limited capabilities - for example, during the "We, Robot" presentation in December 2023, Optimus served drinks and danced, but under operator control, which raised doubts about their real capabilities.

In an interview with Business Insider, Walti stated that "humanoid robots like Tesla Optimus are less effective in warehouse, logistics, and manufacturing environments." He notes that for industrial tasks requiring high speed and repeatability, specialized automated systems are more suitable than universal androids with complex motion mechanics. After leaving Tesla, Walti founded the company Mytra, which develops robots for loading and unloading activities in warehouses. According to him, such machines are simpler and more practical than humanoids.

However, other companies are actively entering the field of humanoid robots. GXO Logistics works with Agility Robotics, testing the Digit robot in warehouse conditions. Amazon has been using similar robots since 2023. Apptronik and Jabil have launched a pilot project with the Apollo robot, and BMW plans to use humanoids in its factories in the USA.

Analysts predict that the mass deployment of humanoid robots in the industry will occur by 2030. The question of how this will impact millions of jobs, however, remains open.
