Today, March 15, 2026, the issue of funding for Bulgaria under the Recovery and Resilience Plan again looms over the political horizon. The reason? A controversial bill on renewable energy sources, whose fate seems uncertain.
Lost funds?
What is actually happening? It turns out that the lack of consensus around the bill could cost our country 437 million euros. The amount is significant, especially in the context of the economic challenges facing Bulgaria.
Pavela Mitova, chair of the Energy Committee and MP from "There is Such a People", raised an alarming signal on the show "This Saturday". She stressed that the deadlines for absorbing the funds expire in August this year. Is there enough time to reach an agreement?
Political fault lines
According to Mitova, complex bills should not be adopted when political support is lacking. She recalled that the bill was controversial even during the regular government. ITN (There is Such a People) warned of the risks that exist for part of the bills in the Recovery and Resilience Plan after the regular cabinet fell.
The reality is this - five out of eight parliamentary groups are against the adoption of the bill in its current form. Mitova has convened three extraordinary sessions, but has not been able to ensure the necessary quorum. What does this mean for the future of the bill?
Time is running out
"No one has said that within a few days we must quickly adopt legislation that has not been cleared of potential errors," Mitova noted. She added that if the funds are not received now, this does not mean that they cannot be received in the next parliament, when there is a political consensus.
