On June 21, the astronomical summer begins, marking the longest day of the year. What to do and avoid on this day, what the folk beliefs are, and what the summer forecast outlines for Bulgaria in 2026.

On "June 21," the Sun reaches its highest point above the horizon for the year, and the summer solstice occurs – the moment that marks the beginning of the astronomical summer. This is also the "longest day" of the year for the Northern Hemisphere – in Bulgaria, the daylight lasts over 15 hours, and the night is the shortest. The exact time of the solstice varies each year, but it is always around the midday hours of June 21 and is accepted as a symbolic peak of light and vital energy.

The summer solstice is a direct result of the Earth's axial tilt – about 23.5 degrees. At this moment, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted maximally toward the Sun and receives the most intense light at the greatest angle, which explains the high summer temperatures and long days. The day around the solstice is traditionally associated with abundance, the blossoming of nature, and a period of active development.

What to do and what to avoid on June 21

In modern spiritual and yoga practices, the "day of the solstice" is considered suitable for taking stock, cleansing, and setting new intentions. Many teachings recommend starting the morning with a short time spent outdoors – a walk, meditation, breathing exercises, or a series of "sun salutations" aimed at a conscious connection with the light and the body.

It is a good idea to clearly formulate our intentions for the coming months on this day – what we want to change, what to let go of, and where to direct our energy. Many people use it as a kind of "new year in the middle of the year" – they write down their goals, wishes, and small, concrete steps for the summer and the rest of the year.

It is recommended to avoid "energy waste" – conflicts, heavy arguments, extreme decisions made under the influence of anger or fatigue. It is not a good time for destructive actions, impulsive breakups, or radical gestures that are not well thought out. From a health perspective, it is also not recommended to have prolonged exposure to strong sun during midday hours, nor excessive consumption of alcohol and heavy food.

Folk beliefs and rituals around the summer solstice

In Bulgarian tradition, the energy of the summer solstice is closely linked to "Enyovden" – the feast of herbs, the sun, and life-giving water, celebrated on June 24. According to beliefs, "at sunrise on Enyovden," herbs have the greatest healing power, especially if they are picked early in the morning, in silence and with a clear intention. Bouquets of "77 and a half herbs" are gathered, which symbolically cure "77 diseases and one without a name."

Folk legends say that if "the sun rises clearly on the day of the solstice and the sky remains clear," the year will be fertile and successful. Warm and clear weather around this day is interpreted as a sign of a good harvest, stability, and abundance. If the day is cool, cloudy, and accompanied by heavy rain, this is taken as a harbinger of a more capricious and stormy summer.

In Slavic and Balkan traditions, there are also rituals involving fire and water. "Purification fires" are lit on high places and hills, and jumping over the fire symbolizes purification and protection from diseases and evil. Bathing in rivers, springs, lakes, or the sea on the night around the solstice is considered particularly beneficial – it is believed that the water then "gathers strength" and brings health throughout the year.

What summer awaits Bulgaria in 2026

Seasonal forecasts for "summer 2026" indicate a warmer-than-usual season for Bulgaria. Average temperatures are expected to be "around and above the norm," which means more days with maximum values above 30°C and more frequent episodes with heatwaves above 35°C, especially in the lowlands and large cities. It is possible that the number of so-called "tropical nights" – when the temperature does not fall below 20–22°C – will increase in urban areas.

The forecasts show that the summer will likely be "dynamic" rather than completely dry. Instead of evenly distributed rainfall, a more likely scenario is "longer dry periods," interrupted by strong thunderstorms with heavy rain for a short time, hail, and the risk of local flooding. Western and Central Bulgaria are traditionally more vulnerable to this type of phenomenon, while along the Black Sea coast, the focus will be on the combination of heat and higher humidity.

A "hot and more humid" summer is expected along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, with high daytime temperatures and sea water temperatures around and above 24–25°C at the peak of the season. This means excellent conditions for sea tourism, but also the need for increased attention to sunburns, heatstroke, and the burden on people in vulnerable groups – the elderly, children, and people with cardiovascular problems.

How to use the energy of June 21 for a personal "summer"

Practically speaking, "June 21" is a good time to plan how we will get through the summer months – both in daily life and on a deeper personal level. In the conditions of a hotter season, it is important to think about adaptation: more water, sensible sun exposure, ensuring cool hours for rest, as well as good organization of work and vacations so as not to reach burnout – literally and figuratively.

Symbolically, the day of the solstice can become our personal "restart." It is useful to ask ourselves questions such as "Where do I want to invest my energy this summer?", "What is it time to release?" and "Which people and projects deserve the most light and attention from me?". Writing down these intentions, combined with small daily changes – more nature, movement, conscious communication – can turn the summer months not just into a period of heat, but into a time of real inner renewal.
