91 years ago, on June 20, 1934, the first planetarium in Bulgaria was opened in the building of the National Astronomical Observatory in Sofia. The facility, equipped with a German optical-mechanical system, allows for a realistic reproduction of the starry sky on a dome and gives hundreds of students, students and citizens the opportunity to get acquainted with astronomical phenomena.
This event marks a new stage in the popular science activities in the country, as it is part of the initiatives of the then Ministry of Public Education and the Bulgarian Astronomical Society. Although the planetarium has subsequently undergone changes, it remains a symbol of the beginning of systematic astronomical education in Bulgaria.
Today, Bulgaria has several operating planetariums - in Smolyan, Varna and Dimitrovgrad, but the beginning of this process was laid on June 20, 1934.
