Residents of the Sozopol village of Atia want a roundabout to be built on the Burgas - Sozopol road in the area of the entrance to the village. 870 people have already signed a civic petition supporting the request.
The locals are calling for urgent measures to increase safety in one of the riskiest sections of the route.
The mayor of Atia, Rumen Dimitrov, stated that the current traffic organization creates preconditions for road accidents, especially on left turns. “We insist on a normal road junction, preferably a roundabout. This place is extremely dangerous, accidents often happen there. The left turn is practically impossible, and there are four turns,” he commented. According to him, the petition started in the spring and has already been submitted to the institutions.
The mayor of Sozopol, Tihomir Yanakiev, confirmed that the request of the locals is supported by the municipality and has been sent to the Ministry of Regional Development. “The desire of the people was objectified in a petition, which we submitted together with the mayor of Atia. We categorically insist on a roundabout to ensure unhindered inclusion in traffic and to prevent accidents,” he pointed out.
In parallel with this, Sozopol Municipality is starting the implementation of the long-awaited project for major repairs to the road between the villages of Atia and Rosen. The project is part of the strategic plan for the development of rural areas and includes a complete rehabilitation of the pavement, new wearing and base asphalt layers, as well as sidewalks in the populated areas. The total cost of the repair is about 2.5 million euros excluding VAT, and the execution period is 240 days.
An additional emphasis on the condition of the road infrastructure is also placed by the upcoming passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling tour through the region. According to Yanakiev, it is the inclusion of the route in the international competition that has accelerated the repair works on the main road. The expectations of the local residents are that decisions for the roundabout will be made in a short time to avoid new accidents in the area before the active summer season.
