Prime Minister Zhelyazkov Calls for Sustainable Support for Ukraine and a Complete Ceasefire
SOFIA - Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov emphasized that security guarantees for Ukraine must be long-term and include sustainable support from both European and Euro-Atlantic partners. This was stated in a message from the government press office following the Prime Minister's participation in a video conference of the heads of state and government of the member states of the European Union.
During the meeting, which was held today, European leaders discussed the results of the meeting held yesterday in Washington, dedicated to the situation in Ukraine. In this context, Prime Minister Zhelyazkov stated that the most immediate priority of the international community must remain the achievement of a full and unconditional ceasefire in the country devastated by aggression. He expressed his firm position that the achievement of a comprehensive and lasting peace in Ukraine is directly linked to the full respect for international law and the established international order.
During the discussions, the Bulgarian Prime Minister welcomed the efforts of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump, aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the conflict. He stated Bulgaria's readiness, along with its partners from the European Union and NATO allies, to contribute actively to building a framework for a just and lasting peace that will end the ongoing military actions and the suffering of the civilian population.
Prime Minister Zhelyazkov's participation in the European video conference followed another important appearance of his – in the video conference of the so-called Coalition of the Willing for Ukraine. This format, which unites countries committed to providing substantial assistance to Kyiv, demonstrates the enduring determination of the international community to maintain its assistance to Ukraine. Following his participation in the Coalition, Prime Minister Zhelyazkov wrote on the social network "X": "All channels of support for Ukraine that we have created so far must continue to be implemented in a coordinated manner as a key element of security guarantees".
The statements of the Bulgarian Prime Minister come against the background of the ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine, which has called into question fundamental principles of the international order such as the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. Such meetings and coalitions underline the firm position of democratic states to support Ukraine in its defense against external aggression and to work for the restoration of peace based on international law. In this sense, the position of Prime Minister Zhelyazkov reflects Bulgaria's consistent line as a member of the EU and NATO, which condemns the aggression and calls for a peaceful solution that guarantees Ukraine's independence.
