End of hopes for a hybrid ID. Buzz
Volkswagen explored the possibility of creating a version of the electric ID. Buzz van equipped with a gasoline engine to serve as a generator for charging the battery (so-called EREV technology). The idea aimed to eliminate range anxiety, especially in the US market.
Design obstacles
The main reason for rejecting the concept turned out to be the MEB architecture. It was designed entirely for electric vehicles, and the short front overhang of the ID. Buzz simply does not leave physical space to mount an internal combustion engine.
"The engineers looked into the option, but the MEB platform does not allow for easy integration of an ICE, even as a generator," shared VW's Stefan Mecha.
What's next for the model?
- Next generation: The future SSP platform will be designed to support range-extender systems, with its debut expected in 2028.
- New ID. Buzz (2027): The model will return with physical buttons on the steering wheel, new colors, and an interesting Tourer version with full camping equipment.
- Market context: Despite difficulties in the US, the ID. Buzz remains a successful model globally, with over 60,700 units delivered in 2025.
Although the range-extender version for the ID. Buzz will not happen, the technology continues to evolve in models such as the ID. Era 9X SUV in China and future vehicles from the new Scout brand.
