Why Cars Were Sunk in Burgas: A New Underwater Park Beneath the Waves
18.05.2025 | Burgas
Off the coast of Burgas, old cars have found a new purpose — forming an artificial reef. Here’s why these vehicles were deliberately submerged and how it benefits the environment and tourism
In the Bulgarian city of Burgas, an unusual environmental initiative is underway: several decommissioned cars were deliberately sunk into the sea.
The goal is to create an artificial reef that will provide a habitat for marine life and a fresh attraction for divers.
Before being submerged, the vehicles were thoroughly cleaned of hazardous materials, such as oil, fuel, and plastics, to avoid harming the marine ecosystem.
These man-made reefs help restore biodiversity by offering shelter and breeding grounds for numerous sea species, while also attracting tourists and underwater explorers.
Similar efforts have shown success in other countries, and Burgas hopes to establish itself as a new hub for eco-tourism in Europe.
