Weekend weather: Heat up to 39°C, sunny and choppy along the coast

August 22 will be very hot, with temperatures up to 39°C, while August 23 brings a slight cooling. Along the Black Sea coast, sea water will be 24–25°C.

The upcoming weekend will begin with dangerously hot weather, and temperatures will drop slightly on Sunday. Saturday, August 22, will be mostly sunny, with maximum temperatures between 34°C and 39°C. On Sunday, August 23, slightly cooler air will enter the country, but the weather will remain summery.

For August 22, NIMH has issued an orange code for dangerous heat in the districts of Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Pleven, and Blagoevgrad, where temperatures between 38°C and 41°C are possible. For the rest of the country, a yellow code for high temperatures is in effect.

The preliminary assessment of bathing conditions is indicative. The official flag signaling at lifeguard posts and the instructions of the lifeguards always take precedence.

Burgas and the region

In Burgas on Saturday, August 22, predominantly sunny weather will prevail. The minimum temperature will be around 20–21°C, and the maximum – around 27–29°C. The probability of precipitation will be low – up to 10%.

On Sunday, August 23, mostly sunny weather is expected with temporary increases in cloud cover. Temperatures will be between 20–21°C in the morning and 26–28°C during the day. The probability of a brief shower remains low – around 10–20%.

The sea water temperature near Burgas will be around 24–25°C. On Saturday, a light easterly wind will blow at a speed of 3–5 m/s, and on Sunday – a light to moderate wind from the northeast, around 4–7 m/s. The sea state will be around 3 points, more noticeable on open beaches.

The preliminary assessment for swimming safety is a yellow flag for both days. The sea will remain warm, but the sea state of around 3 points and possible local currents require caution. Do not enter the water if there is a red flag or if forbidden by lifeguards.

Sofia and the region

In Sofia on Saturday, it will be sunny and hot, with a maximum temperature around 35°C. On Sunday, temperatures will drop by a few degrees, with daytime values around 29–31°C. Precipitation remains unlikely, but on Sunday afternoon, temporary development of cumulus clouds is possible over the surrounding mountain areas.

The wind will be light, from the east-southeast on Saturday and from the northwest on Sunday, mostly at a speed of 2–5 m/s. Sea water temperature and bathing flag do not apply to Sofia. It is recommended to limit physical exertion outdoors during Saturday afternoon hours.

Eastern and Western Bulgaria

In Western Bulgaria, Saturday will be very hot, with temperatures between 35°C and 39°C, and in some areas up to 41°C. In the afternoon, cumulus clouds will develop over the mountains, and brief showers and thunderstorms are possible in isolated places. On Sunday, there will be a slight cooling, but daytime temperatures will remain high – between 29°C and 34°C.

In Eastern Bulgaria, it will be mostly sunny, with temperatures between 30°C and 35°C on Saturday. On Sunday, the maximum values will be between 28°C and 32°C. The wind will be light from the east-southeast on Saturday, and on Sunday it will shift from the northeast and temporarily strengthen to moderate. The probability of precipitation is low, but a brief local shower is not excluded.

Sea water temperature and bathing flag do not apply to inland regions. In hot weather, it is important to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, drink water regularly, and pay special attention to children, the elderly, and people with chronic diseases.

In the mountains

On Saturday in the mountains, it will be mostly sunny and unusually warm. At 1200 meters, the maximum temperature will be around 30°C, and at 2000 meters – around 21°C. In the afternoon, temporary clouds and isolated brief showers are possible over the massifs in Western Bulgaria.

On Sunday, temperatures in the high parts will drop. A light to moderate north-westerly wind is expected, which may temporarily be stronger on the ridges. Data on sea water temperature and bathing flag do not apply. Tourists should plan for sufficient water, protection from the sun, and an early start on the trails.

Black Sea coast

Along the Black Sea coast on Saturday, it will be mostly sunny. In the early morning hours, low clouds and temporary reduced visibility are possible, which will quickly dissipate. Maximum temperatures will be between 26°C and 29°C.

On Sunday, the weather will remain mostly sunny, with temperatures between 26°C and 29°C. The sea water temperature will be 24–25°C. The sea state will be around 3 points, and the wind will be light to moderate, with a prevailing easterly component.

The preliminary assessment for swimming safety along the Black Sea coast is a yellow flag. The sea state may create stronger currents on open beaches, so bathers should follow official signals and not go out into deeper water during rough seas.
