Bulgarian Navy to take command of mine countermeasures group in the Black Sea

The Bulgarian Navy will take command of MCM Black Sea in July. The group is currently under Turkish command. The Bulgarian Navy is participating with a minesweeper and officers. Acquisition of new mine countermeasures vessels is planned.

The Bulgarian Navy (VMS) will take command of the Mine Countermeasures Group in the Black Sea (MCM Black Sea) at its next activation in July, announced Fleet Admiral Radko Penev. The group is currently under the command of the Turkish Navy. Bulgaria participates with the minesweeper “Priboy“ and officers. The group will visit Constanta and participate in the Sea Shield exercise. Fleet Admiral Penev emphasized the need for additional mine countermeasure vessels and a memorandum is to be signed with Belgium and the Netherlands for the acquisition of about seven vessels. Nine floating mines have been discovered in Bulgarian territorial waters, which have been destroyed.
