Varna Municipality is taking active steps regarding a key infrastructure object. The Municipal Council (MC) in the seaside city has decided to seek information from the "Road Infrastructure" Agency (RIA) regarding the current condition of Asparuhov Bridge. This decision is a result of the first meeting of a specially created working group, focused on a detailed study of the technical condition of the bridge.

In an atmosphere of professionalism and focus, the meeting gathered key figures from the local authorities and experts from various fields. Present were the chairman of the MC Hristo Dimitrov, the deputy mayor Dimitar Kirchev, municipal councilors, members of the permanent transport commission, representatives of the municipal administration, as well as specialists from a number of professional organizations.

The situation with the Asparuhov Bridge, which is owned by the state, is of key importance for the city. In August of the previous year, the then-Minister of Regional Development and Public Works assured the public that the facility was not in a critical condition. However, at a meeting in Varna in January of the same year, upcoming work on the design and implementation of a major repair of the bridge was announced, planned for 2025.

The work on the facility requires precise planning, regardless of its current condition. The members of the working group unanimously emphasize the need for preparation, including the development of detour routes and the potential construction of an alternative route. The aim is to ensure a smooth transport flow between the neighborhoods and the city center.

In addition, the possibilities for European funding were discussed at the meeting. At the beginning of 2026, Brussels will open a procedure for the improvement of urban transport links. Varna will have the opportunity to apply for financial support if it meets the necessary requirements. An additional emphasis in the discussions was placed on the introduction of an intelligent system for monitoring the bridge. The lack of accurate data on traffic and the average speed of cars is a problem. Therefore, the group will propose the inclusion of funds for the construction of such a system in the municipal budget for the following year. This will allow the collection of the necessary database for more effective infrastructure management.
