Varna Municipality has signed a contract for the delivery and installation of the first 40 underground containers for collecting mixed household waste in the city.

They will be deployed in stages in different locations – between-block spaces, pedestrian zones, streets, and other public places. The specific terrains will be determined by the district administrations, taking into account the technical requirements for installation, underground communications, and the possibility of their trouble-free service when selecting them.

The underground containers have a capacity of up to 5 cubic meters and are entirely mechanical facilities that do not require electrical or hydraulic systems. They are installed in specially built concrete shafts, and a stable concrete base will be built before their placement. The containers are designed with a high degree of durability – with an anti-corrosion coating, a waterproof construction, and an internal drainage system that prevents the entry of rainwater. The emptying mechanism is fully automated and allows them to be serviced with the existing waste collection equipment in the city.

The underground containers will significantly improve the urban environment – they will reduce unpleasant odors and provide greater capacity for collecting waste and better hygiene, the municipality points out.
