Valentin Velikov - "Firefighter of the Year" 2026

The head of the First Regional Department in Burgas, Valentin Velikov, has been awarded the "Firefighter of the Year" for 2026 for his contribution to extinguishing fires and saving people.

Valentin Velikov, head of the First Regional Police Department in Burgas, is the winner of the “Firefighter of the Year” 2026 competition. His award was presented at a special ceremony at the Ministry of Interior by the caretaker Minister of Interior Emil Dechev. 

Last year, Velikov led and participated in operations during the numerous fires in Burgas, including the extinguishing of the one in Sungurlare. He contributed significantly to the control of the fires, the rescue of citizens and the protection of their property.

I accept the award as recognition not only for myself, but also for everyone in the First Regional Police Department in Burgas. This award motivates me to fulfill my duties with honor and dignity, but I also realize the responsibility that comes with it, said Velikov upon receiving the award.

Last year was very difficult, many fires and disasters occurred. Fortunately, we have prepared, good personnel in this directorate (General Directorate “Fire Safety and Population Protection” (GDPSPP) note by the author). They have a high level of professionalism and are not afraid to risk their health and lives in order to fulfill their official duty, said the caretaker Minister of Interior Emil Dechev to those gathered at the ceremony.
