Ukraine Marks Independence Day, Bulgarians Thank Bulgaria
Today, August 24, Ukraine marks the 34th anniversary of its declaration of independence. For millions of citizens, this is a day for reflection and looking to the future, but for the ethnic Bulgarians in Bessarabia, it holds a particularly personal and profound meaning. Born and raised in Ukraine, they identify themselves as people with "two roots in one heart: the Bulgarian and the Ukrainian". This holiday is both a general, national one and a deeply personal one for them.
In a special declaration, they expressed their sincere gratitude to the Bulgarian people for the solidarity and support provided during the difficult months. According to the text, the help was not limited to humanitarian aid shipments and opened doors to homes but also included professional support—providing jobs, assistance from doctors and volunteers, as well as from journalists and public figures. According to them, this "solidarity is felt far beyond the Danube".
Amidst the ongoing military actions, the community's hopes are focused on the restoration of peace. Their biggest dream is for "a peaceful sky over Odesa, Bolhrad, Kyiv, Izmail, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Sumy", as well as for "families reunited again and children's laughter in schoolyards". They express their firm belief that "this day will come, and we will celebrate it with you!".
Despite all the trials, the Bulgarians in Ukraine are adamant that they will continue to work to preserve their culture and traditions and to "strengthen the bridges between our communities". At the end of their address, they send a dual message: "Happy Holiday, Ukraine!" and "Thank you, Bulgaria, for being with us". The declaration concludes with the powerful words "Slava Ukraini! Heroiam slava!" and "Long live Bulgaria!", as well as the festive "Z Dnem Nezalezhnosti, Ukrayina!".
