Students from Hristo Botev secondary school in Aytos have visited the Provadia–Solnitsata archaeological site, the Glass Museum in Beloslav and the Slava submarine museum.

The trip is part of a local history project, "My Home Region in Family Memories", which the school runs with the Burgas museum. The project also has a media partner.

For the project, the students collect data on the towns and villages in Aytos municipality, local people's stories of past events, legends and descriptions of customs. They also record details about natural landmarks, and photograph and digitise old documents and pictures.

Tatyana Baykusheva of the Regional History Museum and Nikolay Dimitrov, who lead the project, went with the group, along with school head Penka Kiryazova. The organisers say the trip aimed to widen the students' creative horizons and help them set new goals for their research.

The first stop was Solnitsata near Provadia, a prehistoric salt-making centre dated to more than 7,000 years ago and described as the oldest town in Europe. There the students learned how salt was produced and what it meant to people at the time.

The Glass Museum stands on the shore of Lake Beloslav. It is part of Bulgaria's first glassworks and the only museum of its kind in the country. The students watched glass objects being made, looked around the glass cave and the "glass river", and then painted their own designs on glassware.

The group ended the day at Slava, Bulgaria's last submarine, which is now a floating museum. On board, the children learned about the conditions in which sailors served on underwater missions.
