Alarming results from a screening campaign in Burgas
The results of the "Don't Wait for Diabetes" campaign, conducted at the Department of Endocrinology of UMBAL – Burgas, are more than concerning. An analysis of data from 150 overweight patients shows that 83% of them are at high risk of developing diabetes mellitus.
"More and more people are living with risk factors without suspecting them. The disease can be prevented through timely prevention and weight control," shares Dr. Stefka Stefanova.
Major health risks:
- Lipid disorders: 73% of participants have problems with cholesterol and triglycerides.
- Kidney damage: Over 40% of those tested are at risk.
- Weight: 80% of people suffer from obesity, and 20% from being overweight.
Specialists emphasize that early screening is the only way to prevent irreversible complications. It is recommended that overweight people monitor their metrics every 3 to 6 months.
Are children at risk?
The problem does not only affect adults. Doctors from the Second Children's Ward in Burgas are raising the alarm about an increasing number of cases of insulin resistance and prediabetic conditions even among preschool children and adolescents.
