The government approved a significant increase in scholarships for doctoral students and students in public higher education institutions and research organizations.
The decision, taken at today"s government meeting and announced by the press service of the Council of Ministers, provides for a 27.3% increase in scholarships for doctoral students, bringing their monthly amount to 1562 leva _ an increase of 335 leva compared to the current amount.
This will affect a total of 4079 doctoral students, of whom 3802 are studying in higher education institutions and 277 in research organizations. The necessary funds, amounting to 8,468,000 leva, are secured in the central budget for the current year. The new increase will come into effect on October 1, 2025.
In parallel with this, a 15% increase in student scholarships is also planned. The minimum scholarship is increased from 120 to 150 leva, and the maximum _ from 200 to 250 leva. Unlike the increase in doctoral scholarships, this one for students will come into effect immediately after the publication of the project.
The increase in doctoral scholarships is justified by the Council of Ministers as a step consistent with the changes in the minimum wage. The new amount is in accordance with the requirement that the scholarship should not be less than 150% of the minimum wage for the country for the last 12 months.
The government emphasizes that this decision has a stimulating effect on doctoral students, providing them with better financial support and a more peaceful start to their scientific and academic careers.
According to the press service of the Council of Ministers, the measure will contribute to improving the quality of education.
Today"s decision is a continuation of the policy of supporting students, enshrined in earlier government decisions.
As reported by BTA in October 2024, the government has already approved an increase in scholarships for students participating in student internships. At that time, it was decided to increase the hourly rate from 2.50 leva to 4.50 leva, which represents an 80% increase. The increase was made through a change in the decree on the conditions and procedure for granting scholarships to students, doctoral students and trainees.
These measures are expected to have a positive effect on the development of higher education and scientific research in the country. An increase in interest in doctoral programs may also be observed, as a result of the improved financial conditions.
