Unexpected perpetrator profile
The case involving 32 illegal migrants caught at the entrance to Burgas surprised the authorities. A 59-year-old Bulgarian citizen was detained, whose profile differs sharply from the usual one for this type of crime. According to the director of the "Border Police," Anton Zlatanov, the man has two university degrees and a clean criminal record.
The man complied with the police order and did not offer resistance when the vehicle was stopped.
New procedures for migrants
Chief Commissioner Zlatanov specified that the strict rules of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum are now being applied to the captured foreigners:
- Screening procedure: Everyone undergoes a mandatory verification process.
- Specialized centers: Migrants can be detained for up to 7 days at the entry borders.
- Follow-up measures: After the period expires, they are accommodated in specialized centers.
A fast-track pre-trial proceeding has been initiated against the driver.
