Kaloyan Binev, son of the murdered Slavi Binev, has broken his silence in a message on social media. Binev, 28, is a European taekwondo champion. He writes that the man charged with the killing is a family friend who used to call his father his brother.
Slavi Binev was killed on 24 October at his home in the Gardova Glava area of Sofia. On 25 October, interior minister Ivan Demerdzhiev told a briefing that the accused was close to the victim and was not a hired killer.
The background: Demerdzhiev: man charged with killing Slavi Binev was close to the victim, not a hired killer
Police detained three men on the Trakia motorway. Prosecutors charged Turkish businessman Eyup Temiz with premeditated murder. He remains in custody.
The son says his father was killed with a single bullet. "A father of five, a husband, a teacher, a lecturer, a dreamer, a friend, a mentor and so much more was killed!" Kaloyan Binev wrote.
He believes the killing took the lives not of one man but of thousands around the world, because his father left a piece of himself in everyone he met. He remembers him as a strict but loving father, a man of huge heart and dignity. He says Slavi Binev did not deserve this, and that the whole family loves and misses him.
Investigators are looking into a theory that the killing stemmed from a money dispute over business dealings and property interests. The motive has not yet been confirmed.
