Official US request expected for stay at "Vasil Levski" Airport

Minister of Defense Dimitar Stoyanov confirmed that a diplomatic note is expected from the US requesting an extension of the stay of American military aircraft at "Vasil Levski" Airport in Sofia. In response to a parliamentary question, Stoyanov assured that upon receipt of the document, a thorough analysis and risk assessment will be conducted.

"Upon receipt of such a note, an analysis and an assessment of the risks and threats will be carried out, and the legal procedure will be followed," the minister stated.

The equipment is stationed in Bulgaria pursuant to a decision by the "Zhelyazkov" caretaker cabinet, with the current term of stay expiring at the end of May.

Diplomacy and visas for Bulgarian citizens

Prime Minister Rumen Radev held important discussions with the American side, including with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and President Donald Trump. A focus of the dialogue was not only the military presence but also the topic of abolishing visas for Bulgarian citizens.

The government promises to inform the members of parliament in a timely manner regarding the final decision on the extension of the American forces' stay.
