On the eve of the official introduction of the euro in Bulgaria, a large-scale national campaign to facilitate the currency transition has been launched. A key element in this strategy are post offices, which will become the main center for financial transformation.
Deputy Minister Dimitar Nedyalkov revealed details about the currency exchange process during a special interview on NOVA NEWS. According to official information, a large-scale currency conversion operation will start from January 1, 2026.
The main focus is access to exchange in the most remote Bulgarian settlements. A total of 2,230 post offices will be equipped with specialized equipment for currency transactions. The selection criterion for locations is the lack of bank branches in the respective settlements.
The exchange procedure is extremely simplified. For amounts up to 1,000 levs, no prior application is required. Citizens can make a direct cash transfer without additional formalities. For amounts over 1,000 levs, an official request must be submitted, and the money will be provided within 3-5 working days.
Postal workers will undergo specialized training, which starts in July 2025. All branches will be equipped with modern technical means: banknote counting machines, UV lamps for authenticity verification, and video surveillance.
An important detail is the preservation of existing postal stamps. According to legislation, stamps issued in 2025 will remain valid until 2028. Information boards with the official conversion rate will be placed in the offices.
Citizens can check whether their post office participates in the program through the official website of the Bulgarian Post. The presence or absence of a bank branch in the respective settlement serves as an additional reference point.
One of the key characteristics of the process is its accessibility. All services related to the exchange of levs to euros will be completely free. The goal is to maximize convenience for people in the smallest settlements.
"Our main goal is to make the transition to the euro as transparent, simplified, and equally accessible as possible," Nedyalkov emphasized. "Every Bulgarian citizen must have equal opportunities for financial transformation, regardless of where they live".
Pensioners can be calm - their payments in January will be made directly in euros, with the traditional schedule between the 7th and 20th of the month being preserved.
