A large-scale modernization plan for public transport in Sofia
Sofia Municipality is preparing a major investment program worth 367 million euros, announced Deputy Mayor for Finance Georgi Klisurski. The funds, which are planned to be secured through a long-term bond loan or a bank loan, are aimed at a comprehensive renewal of the urban environment.
"Not only to have new vehicles, but also to build the accompanying infrastructure so that they do not break down on damaged roads," stated Klisurski.
What does the investment plan include?
- New vehicles: 200 buses, 75 trolleybuses, 20 trams, and 50 electric buses.
- Infrastructure improvements: Repair of 20 key boulevards and main streets.
- Rail infrastructure: Modernization of dozens of kilometers of tram tracks.
- Pedestrian accessibility: Renovation of 400,000 sq. m of sidewalks.
The project has already gone through public discussion and is pending a vote by the Sofia Municipal Council. This investment is expected to increase travel comfort for Sofia residents and extend the lifespan of the new rolling stock through high-quality road infrastructure.
