Over 42,000 Bulgarian citizens have submitted applications to vote abroad for the upcoming parliamentary elections. The figures show a significant increase compared to previous elections, with the most applications coming from certain countries. The restrictions on polling stations outside the EU are likely a factor.

More than 42,000 Bulgarian citizens have submitted applications to vote abroad for the parliamentary elections on April 19. This is shown by a check on the website of the Central Election Commission (CEC).

A total of 42,217 confirmed applications for voting in a section outside the country. By March 24, Bulgarians abroad can declare their wish to vote outside the country. The data is as of 9:30 p.m. Applications have been submitted from 67 countries.

For comparison - yesterday at 2:30 p.m. the confirmed applications were 37,305.

CEC Deputy Chair Rositsa Mateva said on Thursday that in the elections in October 2024, the applications submitted were 30,688. Now, I suppose, because of the restriction we have for countries outside the European Union, many more applications are being submitted, Mateva added.

At the beginning of the year, the parliament amended the Electoral Code and limited to 20 the sections outside our diplomatic and consular missions in countries that are not members of the EU.
