Tensions in one of Varna's most popular neighborhoods, "Chaika," are escalating. Residents of the area gathered to protest in front of the Municipal Council to protect the last remaining green spaces and playgrounds from encroaching concrete construction.

Why are the people in "Chaika" protesting?

The main reason for the discontent is an investment plan to build a residential apartment building on an existing playground between two blocks. Citizens are demanding an immediate change to the Detailed Development Plan (PUP) and a complete halt to construction.

"The neighborhood is totally overbuilt, flooded with concrete; they have destroyed it, and one can no longer breathe in it," says Krasimira Dimova, one of the active protesting residents.

What is the response of the institutions?

The fight for clean air and recreation areas in "Chaika" remains a leading topic for the people of Varna. It remains to be seen whether administrative promises will turn into real protective mechanisms for the urban environment.
