Court Confirms Arrest of Driver Accused in Deadly Accident Near Nesebar
The Burgas Court of Appeals confirmed the measure of restraint "remand in custody" for a man accused of causing a serious accident in which an elderly woman died and her husband was seriously injured. The incident occurred on the road between Pomorie and Nesebar, in the section between the roundabout in Aheloy and the village of Ravda.
The tragic accident happened on August 12, 2025, a little before midnight, around 11:45 PM. According to the indictment, the man, identified as H. B., was driving a "Land Rover – Freelander" car and violated traffic rules. As a result, he caused a road accident involving a moped. Due to his carelessness, H. B. caused the death of the 77-year-old woman and severe bodily injury to her husband. Instead of providing help, he fled the scene, leaving the victims on the road.
The dramatic scene, which unfolded in the dark part of the day, took place on a main and extremely busy road section. Leaving the victims on the road created an extremely high risk to their lives, as they could have been run over by other vehicles. According to the appellate judges, this fact significantly increases the public danger of the act.
In its decision, the court also took into account the actions of the accused after the incident. He not only fled the scene of the accident but was subsequently located through an active search, including a review of video recordings. When he was detained, substances for erasing traces, such as "korresilin" were found, and attempts to clean up blood stains and traces of the impact were noted. These facts confirm the court's assessment that there is a serious risk of H. B. absconding.
Although the accused has a permanent address, good character references, and is employed, the court believes that these circumstances are not sufficient to exclude the danger of him absconding or committing a new crime. According to the magistrates, the severity of the planned punishment – from 10 to 15 years of "imprisonment" – could motivate the accused to abscond and obstruct the investigation.
Ultimately, the appellate panel finds that at this stage there are sufficient grounds justifying the restriction of H. B.'s personal freedom. His detention is in line with the public interest to prevent him from absconding and from potential future unlawful behavior.
The ruling of the Burgas Court of Appeals is final and not subject to appeal.
