Police have entered the town hall in Sungurlare and seized documents from the administration. No council staff have been detained, mayor Dimitar Gavazov said.
It has not been reported when the raid took place. It is also unclear what police are checking or which documents they want.
Gavazov said he was on a work trip during the search and is now travelling back to town. He does not yet know the details of what police did.
There is no official explanation of why the check is taking place. One is expected later.
Updated (20.10, 14:42): State security agency DANS and the organised crime unit GDBOP are carrying out a check at Sungurlare municipality. It follows an investigation into public contracts, in which there are signs that money was diverted from the budget. Officers are checking how the contracts were carried out, what they cost, how much was paid and whether the work done matches what was ordered. The raid found fake work and improper practices in the choice of contractors.
