Boyan Radev Passes Away: Legend of Bulgarian Wrestling and Olympic Champion

Sad news: Bulgaria has lost Boyan Radev - a two-time Olympic champion, world champion, and benefactor of the National Historical Museum. A tribute to his memory.

The legend of Bulgarian wrestling Boyan Radev died at the age of 83.

Radev was Bulgaria's first two-time Olympic champion from the Games in 1964 in Tokyo (Japan) and in 1968 in Mexico. World champion in 1966 in Toledo (Spain). Athlete of the Year of Bulgaria for 1964, 1967 and 1968.

Winner of the "Golden Necklace" award of the International Wrestling Federation (FILA) (May 31, 2009), of the special medal "Pierre de Coubertin" of the International Olympic Committee (September 18, 2009) for special merits for the Olympic movement. Introduced into the Hall of Fame of the International Wrestling Federation in Oklahoma, USA (September 24, 2009).

He is a holder of the "Stara Planina" order, first degree, for his exceptional contribution to the development of Bulgarian sport (February 14, 2002), of the Ministry of Culture award "Golden Age" necklace for great merits in the field of culture and collecting (February 25, 2014), of the "Sport and Art" award of the International Olympic Committee (December 1, 2014), of the order "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" first degree (June 18, 2010), of the honorary sign "Wreath of the Victor" of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (January 31, 2016), etc.

He was declared an honorary citizen of Sofia in 2004.

Boyan Radev was declared donor number 1 of the National Historical Museum, in which there is a special hall in his name. Nearly 170 exhibits from his collection are exhibited in it - icons, church utensils, wood carvings, stone sculptures, etc.
