Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniel will lead the Divine Liturgy at 9 a.m. today in the Metropolitan Cathedral Church of St. Nedelya, followed by a thanksgiving prayer service on the occasion of the 148th anniversary of the Liberation of Sofia, the Sofia Metropolis announced on its website.
Afterwards, flowers will be laid at the monuments "Bulgarian Volunteer", "Tsar Liberator" and the monument to Gen. Gurko in the capital, the information adds.
On January 4, 1878, the Russian troops, led by Gen. Gurko, entered Sofia. They were welcomed by the residents of Sofia at the square "Koru-cheshme" (today's "St. Nedelya" Square). Teacher Mihail Bubotinov greeted them on behalf of the people of Sofia with a special speech. A thanksgiving prayer service was held in the Cathedral Church "St. Nedelya" in the presence of General Joseph Gurko and Major General Othon Rauch, the Regional Historical Museum-Sofia recalls.
As BTA reported, on January 1, Patriarch Daniel served a liturgy and a prayer service for the new year 2026 in the cathedral "St. Alexander Nevsky".
