The Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) urges drivers planning to travel today and in the coming days to set off with vehicles prepared for winter conditions. The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology has issued a level one warning – yellow code – for significant precipitation across the entire country.
A level two warning – orange code – has been issued for the following regions: Blagoevgrad, Pazardzhik, Plovdiv, Smolyan, Kurdzhali, Haskovo, Yambol, Burgas, Sofia Region, Lovech, Vidin, and Montana.
The road agency adds that regional road administrations are monitoring meteorological forecasts and are ready to take necessary actions to treat road surfaces. The goal is to initiate preventive measures and subsequent snow-clearing activities as quickly as possible to ensure road accessibility.
Which roads have priority?
- Motorways
- The most heavily trafficked routes on the first- and second-class road network
- Passes ensuring connections between Northern and Southern Bulgaria
If necessary, individual road sections may be closed for surface treatment. Where strong winds, heavy snowdrifts, or poor visibility require it, traffic may be temporarily restricted until meteorological conditions improve and the roads are cleared.
Advice for drivers
Drivers are advised to proceed with increased attention and adjusted speed, maintaining safe distances, avoiding abrupt maneuvers, and not overtaking specialized vehicles treating road surfaces, the RIA statement adds.
We recommend: check winter tires, reserve fuel, headlights, and the car's heating system. Be prepared for changes in road conditions and keep safety in mind at all times.
