New rules against unjustified price increases of goods
Parliament is beginning debates on a bill to amend the Consumer Protection Act, submitted by "Progressive Bulgaria". The goal is to curb the speculative increase in the prices of goods and services.
The proposed texts prohibit raising prices without economic justification, establishing a control mechanism by the Commission for Consumer Protection.
What are the main changes?
- Double fines: Sanctions for individuals jump to 10,000 euros, and for legal entities – up to 100,000 euros.
- Transparency: Large retailers with a turnover of over 5 million euros will be required to publish daily price information in a machine-readable format.
- Deadline: The measures are expected to enter into force from August 9, 2026, to August 9, 2027.
Reforms in the judicial system
The agenda of the plenary session also includes discussions on amendments to the Judicial System Act. The main points of focus are:
- Limiting the powers of the Supreme Judicial Council whose mandate has expired.
- Strict criteria for the selection of personnel for judicial bodies.
- Measures against the concentration of influence in senior management positions.
