Bird poisoning in Bulgaria is a critical problem, especially for endangered species such as the Egyptian and black vultures. Dimitar Gradinarov from BSPB (Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds) emphasizes the importance of the topic, related to International Bird Day (April 1st).

According to the data, in recent years a significant number of birds have become victims of poisoning, with vultures being particularly vulnerable. Secondary poisoning, caused by baits for pest control, poses a major threat.

BSPB and other organizations are working to investigate, using trained dogs to detect poisons. There is a Specialized Unit within the police, but investigations are difficult. Legislation is good, but improvement of penalties is needed.

The Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW) supports efforts for effective investigation and highlights the importance of public awareness. Birds are an indicator of the health of the environment. Bulgaria is distinguished by a great diversity of birds and is a popular destination for ecotourism.
