The modern two-story building of the Lung Hospital in Burgas was officially opened, the municipality announced. The new building provides a modern, functional, and safe environment for patients and medical staff and represents an important step in the development of lung care in the region.
The manager of SBALBZ-Burgas, Dr. Evelina Troshanova, shared that in 1930 the first hospital for tuberculosis in Burgas was created, and in 1968 the hospital was moved to its current location. She emphasized that the work of the hospital is focused on the fight against lung diseases, as the incidence of tuberculosis has decreased significantly. During the COVID-19 pandemic, over 1200 people were treated in the hospital. The construction of the new building began in 2023, with the actual construction activities starting on December 10, 2024.
Prof. Diana Petkova, chairman of the Bulgarian Society of Lung Diseases, congratulated those present on the new acquisition, emphasizing that this is one of the oldest lung hospitals in Bulgaria.
The mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, stated that the municipality felt a duty to create quality conditions for treatment and that this hospital serves not only the city but also the entire region. He added that after the new building starts functioning, a major renovation of the other building will begin. The mayor expressed confidence that the new building is necessary and will serve the citizens.
The new building was illuminated and blessed by His Eminence, the Metropolitan of Sliven, Arseniy, and the Burgas clergy.
The new building has three separate entrances, which facilitate access and allow for better separation of patients. On the first floor, there are five doctor's offices, a reception office, a manipulation room, and an archive for patients with tuberculosis. Two waiting rooms have been set up – one specifically for patients with tuberculosis, which guarantees additional safety.
The second floor performs administrative functions and contains offices, an archive, and a modernly equipped presentation hall. The architectural vision of the new building is modern, but at the same time harmoniously complements the main building, built in 1926–1928 as a hospital for the treatment of malaria.
The Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment of Pneumophthisiology Diseases remains the only medical institution in the Burgas region that provides diagnosis, treatment, and dispensary observation of patients with lung diseases and tuberculosis. The hospital has 90 beds, distributed in the Pneumology and Pneumophthisiology departments.
The new building will provide significantly better working and treatment conditions, as well as a higher level of medical safety and comfort for all patients.
Also present at the event were the former deputy mayor of Burgas for healthcare and social activities, Dr. Loris Manuelian, Dr. Zheni Stoichkova - chairman of the RLC of BLS Burgas, the managers of medical and diagnostic-consulting centers in the city, interns and medical students, as well as the team of SBALBZ-Burgas.
