The queue of waiting trucks at the exit from the country at the "Kapitan Andreevo" border crossing point is about 27 km long, Yani Peychev, head of the "Kapitan Andreevo" Border Control Checkpoint (BCP), told journalists. At the entrance to the country from the Turkish checkpoint "Kapikule" the queue is nearly 50 km long, he added. Drivers wait between six and eight hours.
According to Peychev, all waiting trucks are in the emergency lane, so traffic on the "Maritsa" highway is not obstructed. The necessary organization has been created, and work is being carried out at full capacity, Peychev pointed out, clarifying that the number of processed trucks does not affect the quality of their checks. There is also 24/7 contact with the neighboring "Kapikule" checkpoint and the Trilateral Center of our checkpoint.
The head of the checkpoint noted that the excessive traffic is characteristic every year before the Christmas and New Year holidays and expects the current situation to change at the end of next week.
In the last 24 hours, 3100 trucks have been processed at "Kapitan Andreevo" in both directions. Today, from 8:00 to 15:00, 630 trucks passed through the exit, and 530 through the entrance, announced Veselka Simeonova, a state inspector at the "Customs" Agency. She added to the reasons for the congestion the strike of Greek farmers, and the desire of carriers to seek alternative routes.
Simeonova recalled that the expansion of the border crossing point is underway, with which the current capacity of 2700 to 3400 trucks per day will be increased.
The movement of trucks at the border checkpoints with Turkey "Kapitan Andreevo" and "Lesovo" is extremely intense on the exit, the General Directorate "Border Police" (GDBP) announced this morning.
