The conflict between the United States and Iran has entered a new stage of escalation after the two sides exchanged airstrikes for yet another night.

This comes despite assurances from President Donald Trump that Tehran had agreed to continue negotiations. According to him, however, the "peace agreement" reached so far has been terminated.

The latest wave of attacks comes at a time of deep internal shock for Iran. After six days of mourning processions, the country buried Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Khamenei was killed at the beginning of the joint US-Israeli offensive against Iran, which sparked a strong reaction both within the country and in the region.

His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was named as the new head of state and supreme leader, but he has not appeared in public since the official announcement of his appointment in March.
