New strategy against illegal racing and road trauma
The Minister of Interior, Ivan Demerdzhiev, announced after a meeting with the Prime Minister that a large-scale map of all locations in the country used for illegal racing is being prepared. The goal is to identify dangerous zones and take specific measures against high-risk drivers.
Coordination between state and municipal authorities is key to dealing with this complex problem, emphasized Demerdzhiev.
Main measures for better safety:
- Electronic data exchange: Institutions will exchange information in real-time.
- Automation of video surveillance: Full utilization of cameras from the Ministry of Interior, the Road Infrastructure Agency, and municipalities for rapid processing of violations.
- Accelerating sanctions: Overcoming weaknesses in the delivery of electronic tickets.
- Legislative changes: Temporary revocation of driver's licenses for serious violations is planned.
Control over driver's licenses from abroad
The Ministry is focusing its attention on drivers with licenses issued in countries with lower requirements – specifically mentioning the Czech Republic, Greece, and Cyprus. The Ministry of Interior will report abuses and closely monitor these drivers, as statistics show they are often among those involved in serious road accidents.
The institutions will provide an initial report on the progress of the implemented measures in one month.
