Over 7800 tablets and more than six kilograms of powdered substances were discovered by customs officers of the Territorial Directorate Customs - Sofia in the luggage of arriving passengers from India, the Customs Agency announced.

Around 9:00 AM on April 16, customs officers at Sofia Airport Customs Point - passengers, at Terminal 2, stopped two Indian citizens arriving in Bulgaria from India, with a transit flight from Turkey, for inspection. Both stated that they had nothing to declare, but after an inspection of their luggage with an X-ray, uniform items were found in their suitcases. During the thorough customs inspection of their registered luggage, 42 types of different medicines, medical, herbal, and other products in the form of tablets, syrups, powders, gels, seeds, and teas were discovered. A total of 7840 tablets in blisters and bottles were seized, as well as over six kilograms of powdered substances in bottles and packages. The passengers stated that they were carrying the goods for their friends and did not know that they had to declare them.

The fine provided for in the Customs Act for this violation - carrying or attempting to transport goods across the state border without the knowledge and permission of the customs authorities - is from 100 to 200 percent of the customs value of the goods.

At the beginning of the year, customs officers also discovered smuggled electronic cigarettes of the “vape” type at the airport.
