On December 10th, the world marks International Human Rights Day. On this date in 1948, the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – the first universal document that proclaims the fundamental principles of the inalienable rights of every human being. This remarkable document is the starting point for the subsequent creation of a comprehensive set of international treaties, instruments, and mechanisms designed to ensure the observance and protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms.
In the conditions of dynamic geopolitical changes and challenges to the international order, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights retains its timelessness as a recognition of our shared humanity and equality. The Universal Declaration also symbolizes our unwavering striving for a peaceful and just world.
Bulgaria consistently upholds the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and conscientiously fulfills the obligations arising from international human rights treaties to which it is a party. Bulgaria's commitment to promoting, observing, and protecting human rights was also confirmed during the successfully completed Universal Periodic Review on Human Rights on November 6, 2025, in Geneva. International recognition for our country's achievements in the field of human rights is the election of Bulgaria for a second time as a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2024-2026.
International Human Rights Day reminds us that these rights are universal, indivisible, irreplaceable, and interconnected. Bulgaria reaffirms its determination to continue to follow the principles of the Universal Declaration and its readiness to actively contribute to efforts to promote and protect human rights, both nationally and internationally.
