A Mercedes with Burgas plates drove against traffic on Al. Georgi Kodzhakafaliyata Boulevard in Burgas. Police intercepted and stopped it.

Nobody was hurt, and there was no crash.

The alert came from a driver who was passing along the boulevard. Uniformed officers went to the scene and stopped the car. Until then, the driver had been a danger to everyone else on the road. Police have not said when it happened.

Fences separate the two directions of the boulevard, so drivers do not expect a car coming at them in their lane. They have little time to react, and the risk of a head-on crash is high.

Police will establish how the Mercedes ended up in the oncoming lane. The driver may have taken the wrong entrance to the boulevard, ignored the signs or made the manoeuvre on purpose. It is not clear whether police drew up a report or what the driver told them.

Penalties are set by the Road Traffic Act and depend on how the offence is classed. A driver in the oncoming lane of a motorway or an expressway gets a fine of €511.29 (1,000 leva) and loses their licence for three months. These penalties do not apply automatically on a city boulevard.
