Fuel oil pollution along the Southern Black Sea coast: What measures is the MOEW taking?
From the beginning of June until June 29, nearly 200 reports of fuel oil pollution along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast have been received by the Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW). During a parliamentary hearing, Minister of Environment and Water Rositsa Karamfilova stated that inspections have been carried out for all cases.
Most reports were registered in the Burgas region, mainly concerning beaches in the municipalities of Tsarevo and Sozopol.
Who is responsible for cleaning the beaches?
- Guarded beaches: Concessionaires are obliged to immediately organize cleaning after being notified by the Regional Inspectorates (RIEW).
- Unguarded beaches: Cleaning obligations are assumed by the regional governors.
The Ministry is working in coordination with the Executive Agency "Maritime Administration," which is taking action in accordance with its powers. At present, the concessionaires are responding adequately to the instructions, and the institutions continue to monitor the situation and process newly received reports.
