A large-scale project for managing the stray cat population has been launched in Sofia, implemented by the prestigious international organization "FOUR PAWS". The innovative strategy, introduced in 2021, focuses on the modern CNVR approach - a comprehensive program for catching, neutering, vaccinating, and returning animals to the urban environment.
Through targeted actions in collaboration with the Sofia Municipality, experts distribute around 2,000 specialized vouchers annually. These allow citizens to undertake free sterilization and medical care for street cats, which directly impacts population control.
Parallel to practical activities, the organization develops a large-scale educational component. Through a series of initiatives in kindergartens, schools, and public spaces, responsible attitudes towards pets and the importance of their registration are encouraged.
The strategic forecast anticipates achieving a stable population and potentially a slight decrease by 2025. The ultimate goal includes reducing inter-species conflicts and preventing potential epidemiological risks in the urban ecosystem.
