The Metropolitan Directorate of Internal Affairs is undertaking an unprecedented large-scale check of driving schools and issued driver's licenses following a tragic incident that shook Sofia. The investigation was provoked by a fatal traffic accident in which a young driver caused the death of an innocent passenger.
The incident, which occurred at the intersection of "Resurrection" Boulevard shortly after midnight, reveals serious gaps in the driver training and testing system. A 21-year-old driver, holding a driver's license for just two weeks, is responsible for the crash in which one person died and six others were injured.
Concerned by the increasing cases of incompetent drivers, politicians and road experts called for a thorough investigation. Commissioner Stanislava Todorova, deputy head of the Third District Police Department, announced a large-scale police operation aimed at identifying drivers with suspicious driver's licenses.
The conducted study shows that the young driver has already committed six administrative violations, which raises doubts about the quality of his initial training. Institutions are taking immediate actions for a comprehensive check of the driver's license issuance system.
A thorough audit of all driving schools in Sofia is upcoming, and the Ministry of Transport will be notified of possible abuses in certificate issuance. The operation's goal is to restore public confidence in the driver training and certification process.
Experts emphasize that such large-scale checks are extremely necessary to ensure road safety and prevent future tragedies.
