A state of emergency has been declared in the Karnobat area due to a large-scale fire with a high risk to cultural and historical heritage. Mayor Georgi Dimitrov officially informed BTA about the critical situation, emphasizing the serious threat to the archaeological site "Markeli".
The fire front, which covers about 5 kilometers, directly threatens the fortress and surrounding territories. At the moment, there is a real danger of flame spread, further complicated by the extremely strong wind in the region.
Local fire services took immediate measures, mobilizing 9 specialized vehicles from the municipalities of Karnobat, Aytos, and Tsarevo. The fire, which started at noon, covers extensive areas of forest, dry grass, and shrubs, which further complicates its extinguishing.
