A Revolution in UAE Transport
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is preparing to put its first passenger train into operation, marking a new milestone in the country's infrastructure development. The new railway network will connect key cities, changing the way residents and tourists travel between the emirates.
"The upcoming launch of the national passenger rail network" was officially marked by the opening of the new railway station in Abu Dhabi by Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed.
Key dates and routes
- June 30: Launch of the line between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah (the price of an economy class ticket is 55 dirhams / ~$15).
- September 30: Dubai joins the rail network.
- March 2027: Opening of the main station in Sharjah is expected.
The network operator, Etihad Rail, initially used the infrastructure solely for freight transport. Now, the project provides for serving six main destinations, with additional studies planned for expansion to the remaining emirates.
Although previous plans for futuristic systems like "hyperloop" between Abu Dhabi and Dubai remained unrealized, the new rail network is emerging as the most stable and realistic public transport project in the region.
