May 24: Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian Alphabet, Education and Culture, and of Slavonic Literature
"Let us preserve the Bulgarian language, which makes us a nation, which connects us, unites us, and underpins our national self-esteem," stated Vice President Iliana Iotova at an official ceremony in front of the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library.
Language is our strongest connection to the past and a guarantor of our future as a nation.
Earlier in the day, the state leadership took part in the solemn procession in Sofia, during which thousands of citizens honored the work of the primary teachers. The holiday was marked by gratitude for education and spirituality, which are at the heart of the Bulgarian identity.
Why is it important to preserve the Bulgarian language?
- National unity: Language is the shared heritage that defines us.
- Cultural heritage: The Cyrillic alphabet is one of Bulgaria's main contributions to world culture.
- Self-esteem: Knowledge and respect for the native language are the foundation of our national self-esteem.
